What is Kigurumi?

You have surely seen people wearing animal or cartoon characters costumes, performing in the street or taking part in promotional campaigns and public events. Such performers are called kigurumi uk. The word originates from Japanese, where it means tall dolls dressed in certain outfits. There are numerous kigurumi performers in theme parks like Disneyland, at children’s shows, and at festivals. Actors wearing different costumes often perform roles of mascots for sports teams.
At Home, in Japan
In Japan, where numerous subcultures have their own styles of dress, kigurumi are considered to be a part of the ganguro culture. Certain members of ganguro culture use kigurumi costumes uk as daily outfits. Strictly speaking, kigurumi costumes, in their ideal form, consist of many layers, the first of which is a nude color bodysuit of a that is worn under other parts of the outfit. After adding layers designed to make the performer look like a cartoon character or animal,  the head of a kigurumi wearer should be covered with a mask, wig or a hat as the outfit demands. Less detailed Kigurumi outfits are called disguise pajamas. They are usually loose enough, worn as overalls, tailored out of thin soft fabrics and have hoods that serve as masks, but only symbolically. The most popular characters are Pikachu, Hello Kitty, elephants, dogs, cows, pigs, and pandas. Often such costumes are chosen to fit in a certain thematic party or a performance.

In the West
In the western world, these costumes are better known as animal onesies and are still something new for people who are not in the entertainment industry. Still, as an infatuation  with Japanese culture is spreading across the nation, cosplay performers and anime fans are showing more interesting these outfits. Companies that provide them understand the advantages of such costumes and offer them in a wide variety of styles and shapes.
Indeed, onesies for babies are more than traditional clothing: they are comfortable, warm and easy to put on and take off. Children’s onesies come in numerous cute styles that turn toddlers into little bears, kittens or lambs. Still, such “disguise pajamas” can be a perfect choice to wear at home: girls often choose outfits of kittens, bunnies, mice, ladybirds and so on. Men’s kigurumi onesies look quite funny, too, but they are usually chosen for special occasions and parties: outfits of bats and black bugs are perfect for Halloween, or other parties.
